An electric water heater does not perform its main function in the event of a malfunction of the following elements:
Heating element - a tubular heater, often failing due to prolonged use.
Anode - a rod made of non-corrosive steel, on the surface of which a magnesium coating is applied, attracting salts in the water,. It is necessary to change the anode at least annually, and with frequent use - at least once every 6 months. If the anode malfunctions, plaque will begin to be deposited on the walls of the tank and the surface of the heating element, the boiler will stop heating the water.
Thermostat is a component that controls the heating of water. The element determines the temperature of the water and, comparing it with the user-set one, turns the relay on or off.
Insulating gaskets - elements used as a seal for the contact area of the storage device and the connecting flange, and also protecting the owner from electric shock.
Replacing the heating element
Regardless of the reason the water heater is unable to heat water to the required temperature, to change the heating element, you need to perform the following actions:
Shut off the water supply to the boiler on the riser. The hot water tap must also be set to the closed position.
Remove all water.
Disconnect the power supply.
Remove the cover and, using an indicator screwdriver, make sure that there is no voltage at the terminals.
Wall-mounted models are removed and placed on the floor.
Unscrew the nuts and disconnect the wires, fixing the order of connection, so that during assembly they can be replaced without any problems. It is advisable to photograph the process.
During the replacement process, it is necessary to ensure that no moisture gets on the contacts.
Often, together with the heating element, it is necessary to replace and protect it from deposits of the anode. You should also inspect the gaskets placed between the heating element and the tank. If there are dents or breaks on the insulation, it must be replaced as well.
Installing a new heating element is carried out in the reverse order. Before turning on the device is checked for leaks.
Cleaning the heating element
To clean the heating element covered with scale, a solution of citric acid is used, prepared at the rate of 50 g per 1 liter of water. The solution must be prepared in such a volume that the heating element can be completely placed in it.
Having held the heating element in the solution for a couple of days, the remains of scale and dirt are carefully removed with a stiff brush.
Works are performed in such sequence:
the pressure ring located near the heating element is removed
the thermostat sensors and the control unit are removed
a new device and the pressure ring are installed
the water heater is being assembled
The device cannot be used immediately after the thermostat has been replaced. First, you need to make sure that cold water is flowing, inspect the connections for leaks and, by opening the hot tap, release the accumulated air. Then the device is connected to the electrical network, a test run is performed with a gradual increase in the heating temperature. If you need help with water heater repair, call us right now!
